Dreamscape XIV

I had no idea what I was doing,
But I had to try.
I had to act confident and somehow pull it off.
I went through the halls
Spouting passwords,
Issuing orders—
Hoping I could get through security,
Hoping I could get the launch sequence started before I was found out.

By the time I was discovered
The countdown had begun,
It was too late to stop.
However, considering the emergency,
Our plan was approved.

War was imminent:
Nuclear weapons were on alert.
We had to get the shuttle in orbit—
We had to launch the ark.
I could have been on that flight,
But it would not have been practical.
We had selected healthy, young couples who could,
If necessary,
Repopulate the earth.

The shuttle was launched;
Like those of us remaining,
Its passengers had to wait. . .
Wait until the crisis was resolved
One way or another.
I had another trip to make—
I had to find my friend.
I did not want to wait alone;
I did not want to die alone.
